#TWO: Moving Images

Images have a real effect on how we see ourselves and the world around us. Our photographic archives offer a deeper understanding of these perceptions.  Which images are harmful? Which ones have the power to heal? What are the stories that cause these images to be?

the call:

Through a Lens Darkly: Black Photographers and the Emergence of a People (2014):

For more content, visit 1World1Family.me !

A UK premiere, Through a Lens Darkly explores the history of photography and Black representation and how contemporary artists use this material as inspiration in their visual storytelling. Featuring photographers and artists including Carrie Mae Weems, Lorna Simpson, and Anthony Barboza, Thomas Allen Harris' (Dir.) 2014 offering shakes up the familiar foundation of the images that have shaped the popular cultures view of what Blackness is and who Black people are.

the response:

Living our own tradition. we invite your responses . To open the way, we have invited:

Charlie Phillips

Arguably one of the most important Black photographers of his era in Britain, we invite you to share images and stories with Charlie Phillips. Now enjoying international acclaim, Charlie's documentation of Black London provides an invaluable entry into the personal and collective stories of people of African descent. In addition to responding to the themes raised by the screening, Charlie will be digging into his own archive to share some never before seen items in his collection - and the stories behind them.

 Adama Jalloh

Intergenerational conversations are important, so we have invited young photographer Adama Jalloh to share her responses, stories and images from her archive. Adama's work has been featured in the British Journal of Photography and the New Statesman among others. We are especially interested in projects like 'SE15' which focusses on documenting Black businesses in Peckham before they are wiped out by mercenary property developers and 'Identity', a series of images made to enable young Black females to see themselves reflected in print and on screen.

Alim Kamara

Narrating the Diaspora, Storyteller and Philanthropist Alim Kamara will be connecting the images and conversations through the spoken word; answering the call with a response that considers images, reflections, representations and their power within our communities.

Tickets for the program are £8
