PROGRESS (1968)

Progress (1968) is an immersive visual and sonic experience exploring notions of time, struggle and spirituality. The film captures rare perspectives of global political shifts, considers African futures, precolonial pasts, and asks the viewer to reflect on what ‘progress’ means for us as people of African heritage. The work was created in 2019 by Archivist Etienne Joseph, Franco-Rwandese writer and visual artist Ada Cotton and cultural Programmer Jeffrey Lennon.

The film was first screened as an outdoor installation in Windrush Square, Brixton, London in 2019. It was subsequently selected as runner-up for the Aesthetica art prize in 2023, and has since been screened twice at the Dakar Biennale (2024/25).
